Chauncey H. Austin was born September 18, 1832 in Northeast Twp, Erie, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Arva Owen Austin and Betsy Douglass. Chauncey died December 18, 1908 in San Diego, San Diego, California and was buried in Greenwood Cemetery, San Diego, California. He married Theresa Pearson on June 26, 1853. They had 3 children: George Henrique Austin, Fred Loring Austin and Charles Henry Austin. Chauncey lived in Sharon Twp., Walworth Co., Wisconsin with Theresa in 1853. He opened a shoemaker’’s shop in Mankato, Blue Earth CO., Minnesota in 1868. In 1892, Chauncey had moved to Madison Lake, Blue Earth CO., Minnesota. Around 1900, Chauncey moved to San Diego California. Chauncey H. Austin Family Bible is a source of many of the genealogical records and much of the entries appear in his handwriting. Chauncey was a Civil War veteran and was enlisted in Company F, 156th Illinois Infantry. One of Chauncey’s granddaughters recalls “being told by my mother Hattie (wife of Charles Henry Austin) that Chauncey married again before he enlisted, but found upon his return, that his wife neglected the boys or in some way had not take good care of them so he divorced her. There are no records (that I have found) who she was, and that episode was not openly discussed."
