Arva Owens was born February 14, 1971 in Paris, Oneida, New York. He was the son of Nathaniel Austin and Humillis Owen. Arva died 1863 in Leroy, Boone County, Illinois. He married Phoebe Pickett February 13, 1809. On March 27, 1819, Arva was commissioned into the military. He was appointed and constituted as Lieutenant of a Company of Riflemen in the 169th regiment, New York Infantry. Arva was widowed between 1820-1825. He later remarried Elizabeth (Betsy) Douglass on January 1, 1826 in Fredonia, Chautauqua, New York. They moved to Pennsylvania and had 6 children: Sardinia Austin, Mary Humillis Austin, Sardinia Austin, Lorinda Lovinia Austin, Chauncey H. Austin, and Amanda Austin. Arva was a farmer. In his later years, there are letters suggesting he was a traveling preacher.
