NARA shows a Herrm. Frankhanel leaving Germany when he was 27. Thatmanifest identification number is 31952. The NARA shows this manifestis for the Ship Vandalia, departing Hamburg and arriving in New Yorkon 15 July 1871. Here is information about the Vandalia:
The "Vandalia" was built in 1871 by Caird & Co, Greenock for theHamburg America Line. She was a 2,810 gross ton ship, length 330ft xbeam 39ft, one funnel, two masts (rigged for sail), iron construction,single screw and a speed of 11 knots. There was accommodation for150-1st, 70-2nd and 150-3rd class passengers. Launched on 22/4/1871and meant for the New Orleans service, but started her maiden voyageon 28/6/1871 when she left Hamburg for New York. She made 27 NorthAtlantic crossings, starting the last on 12/2/1883, and was then soldto British owners. In 1884 she was purchased by the Hamburg HansaLine, renamed "Kehrwieder" and on 12/4/1885 commenced Hamburg -Montreal sailings. She made her last voyage on this service on17/10/1891 and on 15/3/1892 made a single round voyage between Hamburgand Boston. She was then taken over by Hamburg America Line, togetherwith the rest of the Hamburg Hansa Line fleet and resumed sailingsbetween Hamburg and Boston on 10/8/1892.
